Saina in fine form

Saina Nehwal and Chetan Anand notched up easy wins but P Kashyap fell by the wayside as India rounded off a mixed day at the WBC.

Sixth seed Saina didn't show any sign of fatigue after recovering from a recent bout of chicken pox and outplayed Russian Anastasia Prokopenko 21-10 21-17 in just 27 minutes to advance to the pre-quarterfinals.

She will next face Bulgarian Petya Nedelcheva, who beat Singapore's Aiying Xing 26-24 19-21 21-6.

In men's singles, 15th seed Chetan steamrolled Bulgarian Stilian Makarski 21-9 21-17 in a 28-minute match to set up a third round clash with sixth seed Sony Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia tomorrow. Sony beat Poland's Przemyslaw Wacha 21-12 21-13.

Kashyap created a flutter by winning the first game against World number two Jin Chen but the Indian was outdone by the Chinese laster on and went down 21-14 10-21 7-21 in a 53-minute encounter.

In the men's doubles event, the Indian pair of Akshay Dewalkar and Jishnu Sanyal also squandered a game's lead to go down 21-17 13-21 18-21 against 16th seed Vitalij Durkin and Alexandr Nikolaenko of Russia in 40 minutes.

Schumi thanks ferrari

Michael Schumacher expressed his disappointment at not being able to race for Ferrari in the European Grand Prix in Valencia.

Schumacher agreed to step into the cockpit to replace Felipe Massa, who was left with serious head injuries after being struck by a spring off Rubens Barrichello's Brawn GP car during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix,

But the German's bid to return to Formula One has been dashed due to a previous neck injury.

The 40-year-old injured his neck during a fall from a motorbike in February and has not recovered enough to sit in the Ferrari cockpit in just over 10 days' time.

"First of all I would like to express my regret that I have to be here, but my first wish is to thank the lads at Ferrari who have been extremely supportive of me in this phase and to whom I am extremely sorry," he told a press conference today.

"I would also like to say a huge thanks to all the fans who have motivated and supported me more than I could have dreamed of."

Schumacher recently tested Ferrari's F2007 on the Tuscan circuit of Mugello in preparation for his return in Valencia, but he realised afterwards his neck was not yet strong enough to deal with the strains of a Grand Prix weekend.

He had discussed his potential return with his doctor before and after the tests in Mugello and they decided the only way to know would be to sit in the car and see how the neck reacted.

The results have led to Schumacher having to call off his Formula One comeback.

"I was happy to drive and help our team with all the emotion and motivation that I have and with full engagement, but then it has not worked out," he explained.

"It is only when a driver sits in such a Formula One car that you can gather the information on whether it is possible or not.

"We have not made a secret about my motorcycle crash and we said from the very beginning that we would check the situation with these tests in Mugello.

"The doctor told me before that this test would be decisive and obviously we needed a bit of time afterwards to see how it developed and only after that we could make a definitive analysis and answer."

Ferrari's test driver Luca Badoer will now race alongside team-mate Kimi Raikkonen in Spain and Schumacher says there is no better driver to step in.

"Badoer has been in the sport for as long as me, if I remember rightly, and he has been a test driver for us with the task of being fit and ready for this kind of situation," he said.

"He is the one who knows the team the best, knows all the procedures, the engineers and the details of the car so he is the perfect solution in my eyes."

Schumacher was coy on a potential return to Formula One if he makes a complete recovery from his neck injury, insisting: "Speculation is in this business all the time, but of course it is not an issue I am currently dealing with."

He instead preferred to think of seeing Massa back in a Ferrari as soon as possible.

He said: "Of course I am in constant contact with Felipe, not because we are colleagues but because we have been friends privately for a long time.

"We spoke yesterday and he is good and motivated to get back as soon as possible.

"He is looking forward to getting back into the car. The real positive about this whole thing is that he is so well after this dangerous accident."

Walcott to man city ?

OK, much of today sees the bleating papers and dynamic websites trying to weaken Arsenal by ripping out their very soul. Yes, Cesc 'I am really that good, even if I don't try too hard' Fabregas is off to Barcelona apparently, with the Spaniards offering a number of players in exchange as well as a wedge of cash.

I have also heard from one of those web forums thingies that Manchester City have offered over 20 million pounds for Theo Walcott. Two things here. Wenger should definitely have a ponder about selling Fabregas and should not think twice about selling Walcott to those nasty cash wielding Citizens.

Fab is fab but did that injury last season do something to him? Didn't quite look the same when he came back. And Walcott is as over rated as I am in golf. Everyone, including me, thinks I am good at golf but the truth is, I am not. And that is the same with Theo. I love the little whipper snapper but he can't pass and once his one-trick-pony-trick of 'poking the ball past the defender and running after it - fast' starts to wear a little thin then he has nothing.

If he did go to City I would laugh because if you watch any Arsenal game from last season you will realise that Adebayour never passed to him. And I mean never. And that's because he knew the ball would go to the opposition quick sharp.

So, statement number one: Arsenal WILL sell Walcott and WILL think about Fabregas going!!!! Ok, so I wasn't so insightful on the Fabregas bit but Wenger seems to be proving some football point at the moment.

The point being that he does not need these big name, big transfer tag players. He can do without Toure and Adebayour and won't held to a ransom for any players. If a team is stupid enough to pay big money for a player that cost Arsenal relatively little, then Wenger loves that, just to make a point to the footballing world.

Elsewhere, here is another statement that I would like you opinion on: It looks like Ryan Shawcross will go to Liverpool. Stoke played well against Liverpool last season and Rafa likes to buy players who performed well against his team. Just look at what happened with Peter Crouch. One good display for the Saints against Liverpool and eight weeks later he is a Liverpool player.

Wenger believes his squad

Arsene Wenger admits he could head into the Barclays Premier League campaign with the squad he has now - and will "trust" his men to deliver.

The Gunners completed their build-up at Valencia on Saturday night, losing 2-0 in the Mestalla which was the only defeat of pre-season.

With the majority of the first-team squad now set to be away on international duty - including Theo Walcott with England and youngster Jack Wilshere in the Under-21s - Wenger is keeping his fingers crossed he will have no fresh injury concerns when the players return ahead of Saturday's trip to Everton, which is set to be closely followed by the first leg of the Champions League qualifier against Celtic in Glasgow.

Moves for former captain Patrick Vieira and Bordeaux's £12million-rated Morocco striker Marouane Chamakh appear no further forwards, while Arsenal have also been linked with St Etienne midfielder Blaise Matuidi.

Defender Philippe Senderos is expected to join Everton, if a fee can be agreed, although the club will not entertain any interest in captain captain Cesc Fabregas, who has, not for the first time this summer, been linked with a transfer to Barcelona.

Wenger has complete faith in the men already at Emirates Stadium.

"Not at the moment, no," said Wenger when asked if there was any imminent news on the transfer front.

"We work always, but it would be pretentious to say that we signed anybody now before the season starts."

He told Arsenal TV Online: "I am very optimistic about the season and I am very positive about this team.

"We always have to listen to peoples' opinions, but you also have to trust what you see in the games and in training.

"Overall it was very positive preparation, and I believe we have shown quality in every game.

"It is unfortunate that now everybody goes away on international games, which is why we have to cross our fingers that everybody comes back in good shape.

"But overall, physically, everybody is ready to start."

Thomas Vermaelen is, so far, Wenger's only summer signing, with Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor and defender Kolo Toure the main departures as they joined Manchester City.

The Belgian centre-half did not feature in the final three friendlies because of a groin problem, but is expected to be available for this weekend.

"He is very close," said Wenger, who is without both injured wingers Tomas Rosicky and Samir Nasri.

"If we had wanted to take a gamble then we could have played him against Valencia, but we did not want to.

"He should be available for next weekend."

Walcott played the second half on Saturday, in what was his first appearance of pre-season having been given some extra time off following a busy summer of international football, which included the European Under-21 Championships, where England reached the final.

Wenger feels some more match against for the 20-year-old forward during Wednesday night's friendly in Holland would be beneficial.

"[England manager Fabio] Capello told me they would call him up so I am not surprised," Wenger said.

"Theo needs competition so if he plays it is good for us."

Meanwhile, Strathclyde Police have confirmed the first leg of Arsenal's Champions League play-off against Celtic will take place as originally scheduled on Tuesday August 18.

Concerns had been raised over the timing, because pop group U2 are holding a concert at Hampden Park on the same evening.

Supporters have been advised to arrive early at Celtic Park, with the gates set to open at 6.15pm.

"Strathclyde Police acknowledge that this will be a very busy time for the city, but as with any major event, public safety will be paramount," a police statement read.

"Contingencies will be in place across the whole of Strathclyde to ensure the safety of supporters and members of the public, not only for the match, but also for the U2 concert at Hampden Park.

"High-visibility policing and additional patrols in and around the city centre, together with a robust road policing plan will ensure that these events pass off safely."

Viera not to arsenal again

Patrick Vieira will stay at Inter Milan and not rejoin former club Arsenal.

According to Sky Sports, the influential midfielder has been linked with a reunion with Arsene Wenger during the summer.

The Arsenal manager did not rule out re-sgning the Frenchman as Tottenham also show their interest in Vieira.

It has been claimed Vieira could leave Serie A champions Inter in a bid to secure regular first-team football ahead of next summer's World Cup.

But it is understood the 33-year-old is to remain at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, ending speculation of a sensational return to England's top fight.

Djourou returns

Defender Johan Djourou has been released from the Switzerland squad to return to Arsenal for treatment to a knee injury.

The 22-year-old is suffering from inflammation in his left kneecap and will miss tomorrow's friendly against Italy in Basle as a precaution.

Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfeld told the Swiss FA's official website: "We don't want to take an unnecessary risk shortly before the start of his club's season."

Hleb regrets his mistakes

Alexander Hleb admits he made a mistake in leaving Arsenal last summer.

The Belarus midfielder has returned to Stuttgart, four years after he left the Bundesliga side, on a year-long loan deal after a difficult season at Barcelona.

Hleb rarely featured as the Catalans stormed to the treble and he believes he should never have left North London.

"Of course I regret leaving Arsenal," he told ESPN. "I was playing every week for one of the most exciting sides in Europe, a team which was always in the top four in the Premier League and were Champions League contenders.

"Also, I was being guided by one of the best coaches in the world in Arsene Wenger. I owe him a great deal.

"I developed a better all-round game under him and I became more robust physically, learnt to look up more and play better passes and generally improved greatly as a team player.

"No player ever gets worse under Wenger. For me, leaving Arsenal was not a good move.

"A footballer only exists when he takes to the field and makes a proper contribution to the team and even though I was part of a Barca squad that was almost unstoppable, it was hard not to feel detached from all the happiness and celebration at the end."

Arsenal also had a poor season as they finished in fourth place in the Barclays Premier League, 18 points behind Manchester United who also dumped them out of the Champions League at the semi-final stage, winning 4-1 on aggregate.

However, Hleb feels Arsenal can usurp United this season.

"Obviously, I still look out for Arsenal each week and I hope they can do well this time," he continued.

"I think they will be in the top four again and could even push for the title if they don't have the terrible injuries of last season.

"People forget the long unbeaten run they had after Christmas last season, which was a good sign for this season."

It became obvious Hleb's time at Barca was coming to an end when the Catalan's offered him as part of the swap deal which took Samuel Eto'o to Inter Milan and Zlatan Ibrahimovic the other way.

Hleb, who only made 19 Primera Division appearances and never found the back of the net for Barca, turned down a move to the San Siro but insists it is no reflection on Jose Mourinho's team.

"Barca were my dream club as a kid, but I couldn't continue with them if the chance to play was not coming," he said. "I'm 28 and who knows how much time I've left in the game.

"I needed to move on and the chance to go back to a place that I feel happy in was the best solution. It was more a pro-Stuttgart than an anti-Inter decision.

"I was coming off the back of a season almost entirely spent on the bench at Barca and just wanted to go to a team where I was completely comfortable and could play regularly.

"I had five very happy years at Stuttgart and know the club well, so no one needed to tell me how ambitious they are."

Wenger adamant of his success

Arsene Wenger is adamant that he can win the Premier League title with his current squad – the reason he turned down Real Madrid.

Wenger revealed this reason in an interview as to why he rejected a move to the Bernabeu - and the opportunity to work alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka - to stay with the Gunners.

"I felt if I left I would have in some way betrayed my beliefs," said Wenger. "It was nothing to do with Real Madrid, it was about Arsenal."

"I knew what Real were about to do but I have a project here that I started four years ago. I could not leave at this stage of their development."

"To talk of winning the League is an audacious statement but I built this team and I want to deliver with this team," added the Frenchman.

"At 22 or 23 a team is mature enough to deliver."

Yousuf gets the accolades

Batting greats Hanif Muhammad and Javed Miandad have paid glowing tributes to comeback man Mohammad Yousuf.

Hanif was all praise for Yousuf, who returned to the national fold after being out in the wilderness for some time, for not throwing his wicket and playing according to the situation.

"He does not hurry his shots and treats the good deliveries with respect. He waits for the deliveries that can be scored off. The pitch at Galle is not easy for batting and shot selection was very important. Yousuf excelled in this and played according to the situation," Hanif said.

"I think Yousuf has proved he is one of the few great players to emerge in Pakistan cricket in the last two decades.

He is a world class performer and backbone of Pakistani batting," he added.

Javed Miandad

Miandad, who remains Pakistan's leading Test run-getter, said he was happy to see Yousuf back in the team.

"He has been one of our main players and he has proven himself as a world-class batsman. He has true class required to be consistently successful at this level," Miandad said.

"There is no doubt that he played a class innings due to which Pakistan finds itself in a strong position in the Test.

I am happy he is back and Pakistan certainly needs players of his calibre."

MIandad will help batsmen

Former captain Javed Miandad was on Thursday entrusted with the responsibility of working as the batting coach of Pakistan.

Miandad is currently the Director General of Pakistan Cricket Board and now he has been given an additional responsibility.

"Miandad will help the batsmen"

PCB chairman Ijaz Butt told reporters that Miandad has been asked to work with Pakistani batsmen and prepare them for the Champions Trophy.

"Miandad will help and assist in preparing the Pakistan batsmen for the Champions Trophy in South Africa," Butt said after the PCB governing body's meeting.

"We have grey areas in the batting department and we want to work on those areas," he said.

"Miandad's huge experience and vast knowledge of the game made him an obvious choice for the job and the former captain has agreed to accept his new role," he added.

Miandad, however, would not accompany the team when they travel to South Africa in September, the PCB chairman said.

Butt revealed that former opener Saeed Anwar has also offered his services and said the PCB would consider his case.
